What's wrong with my "mate" mates?

Howz it going? I tried "mate" when I was in Argentina last month and I bought one to take back to Aus with me. I followed the instructions people gave me to prepare the drink (like adding warm water first) but it still doesn't taste very good - nothing like the mate I tried on holiday.

What am I doing wrong??

Cheers - ausBo

Did you cure the mate before using it?

Sorry for the delay

When you buy a new mate the inside of it is dry and needs to be cured so that the drink will taste better.

To cure a mate you should put some used yerba into it, leave it for a day, throw out the yerba then repeat the process a few times. Over time the insde of the mate will absorb some of the taste of the yerba and turn a little green.

This is easy for an Argentine person because they will have another mate to use when curing the new one. But for you, I guess you should prepare the mate then leave the moist yerba inside for a day before throwing it out. Then do the same the next day and I hope on the third day you can drink the mate and it will taste nice!
