Thanks to some great help on these forums I'm thinking of doing a Spanish course split between Buenos Aires and Bariloche.

Bariloche sounds really beautiful situated near the mountains. I was wondering what else there is to do there besides skiing in the winter and trekking in the summer? Are there some points of cultural significance nearby?

Also, is the cost of living there cheaper than in Buenos Aires or about the same? I'm planning on being there for maybe one month.

Thanks so much!

We have a blog, www.livinginpatagonia.com that might give you some ideas.

You've got some great photos and stories there soulskier! It really looks like a paradise and has a lot of similarities to Switzerland.

I'm also interested Susana's post since I'm hoping to head over your way later in the year (probably winter). Are there any special events on in the area, or other unique things to see (other than the mountains and lakes of course)?

I assume short-term apartment rentals go up in cost over dec/jan and june/july? Are you able to compare the cost of living in Bariloche vs that in Buenos Aires?

Cheers

Hola,

Yes, we call this a poor man's Switzerland actually. Rates, at least at our casita go up on July 15. You could come before then and stay for much cheaper.

I think the cost of goods is comparable to BA. There are a suprising amount of good restaurants here as well.

There are a lot of festivals in Patagonia, I found this page
http://www.portalpatagonico.com/patagonia/varios/fiestas.html.

We are actually going to a beer festival in Colonia Suiza this weekend with live music as well.

And lastly, there is plenty to do besides the normal outdoor activities. There is a really great craft fair in El Bolson, 1.5 hours south, a chocalate factory tour, rosa mosqueta factory tour, beer tour, caves to see, chairlifts to ride, and many great roads to drive and explore.

Thanks for the info soulskier. How was the beer festival in Colonia Suiza?

The beer festival was a blast. Lots of beer (obviously) and some great live music. We left at 2am and the place was still hopping. Good stuff!

Excellent! Was it all locally brewed beer? I'll have to add the event to my calendar for next year.

Yes, there is quite a community of brewers here and in el Bolson. Shanie wrote a little entry about them. http://livinginpatagonia.com/?p=111

I thnk the El Bolson hops festival is next month if you and want to get out of the big city for the weekend.

Interesting, so it's not just the mountains and lakes that make Bariloche the "little Switerland", but the beer too! (well, Swiss/Bavarian,etc.) I wonder if they brew Weissbier there.

Close to weiss beer, it is called Rubia. Gilbert is our favorite.
