Situated in the northwest of Argentina, Catamarca province borders on the Argentinian provinces of Salta, Tucumán, Santiago del Estero, Córdoba, La Rioja, and Chile across the andes. Around 70% of the population of the province live in the capital San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca (sometimes referred to simply as Catamarca) and its surroundings. One of the province's main tourist attractions is the Antofagasta de la Sierra - a volcanic field formed of scoria cones - this is one of the least populous areas of the country. Bajo de la Alumbrera, one of the World's largest copper and gold mines is also located in Catamarca province.
